Time For Self-Reflection: Why it matters in leadership and the power of retreats

In the fast-paced rhythm of our lives, taking time out for ourselves can feel like an indulgence we can't afford. Between the demands of work, family, and the ever-growing list of responsibilities, self-care often takes a backseat. Yet, dedicating time to pause, reflect, and engage in self-reflection is one of the most powerful gifts we can offer ourselves.

Why Self-Reflection Matters for Leadership

Self-reflection causes us to pause and ask important questions: What drives me? What are my strengths? What are my blind spots? How do I align my actions with my values? These questions contribute to enhancing self-awareness are crucial, particularly for leaders and managers. From our impact evaluation work, leaders who practice self-reflection and emotional intelligence indicated they are better equipped to manage stress, make thoughtful decisions, and lead with empathy. Self-reflection fosters a more thoughtful approach to leadership, which leads to more authentic and effective results.

For women in leadership and managerial roles, societal pressures create even more layers of complexity. Women are often expected to balance their professional responsibilities with personal and social obligations, which can lead to stress and burnout. Research by Neff (2020) underscores the importance of self-compassion in these situations, showing how it helps build emotional resilience and a strong sense of self-worth. By taking time for self-reflection, one can embrace self-compassion and build the resilience needed to lead with confidence and authenticity.

The Power of Retreats and Dedicated Time for Self-Reflection

One of the most effective ways to cultivate self-reflection and self-awareness is through retreats or structured time away from your day-to-day life. A retreat provides the space and environment for dedicated self-reflection, something that’s hard to come by in our daily routines. It offers a place where the focus is on connecting with self. When we step away from the usual hustle and bustle, we gift ourselves the time to reconnect with who we truly are beneath the roles and responsibilities. Without constant distractions, we can assess where we are in life—personally and professionally—where we want to go, and what might be holding us back. We become more open to creativity, ideas, and opportunities that will support our next steps or drive us toward our ultimate professional and personal goals.

Capaldi et al. (2021) found that exposure to natural environments significantly reduces stress, enhances well-being, and promotes mindfulness. These outcomes are highly beneficial for leaders looking to improve their emotional resilience and cognitive functioning. The study underscores that spending time in nature creates an ideal setting for self-reflection and personal growth. This is why most retreats take place in nature or away from retreats and we decided our upcoming Women's Resilience and Leadership Retreat will take place in a beautiful and relaxing setting in Thailand.

Rediscovering One’s Path Forward

“I want to take time to self-reflect and be at peace with myself on who I am now, what I want to be and how to get there. I want to take a step back, reflect and work on my resilience and my leadership.”

In our work with individuals from Australia and around the world, one of the most common challenges clients come to us with is feeling stuck, unclear about their next steps or next professional chapter. They want clarity about the direction they should be heading towards. If they know the ‘Why’ and ‘Where’ they want to go, they often struggle with the ‘How’. Life is dynamic, and change is a very real component of it. What worked for us in the past may no longer serve us today. This is why self-reflection is so important—it helps us to continuously re-align our actions with our evolving selves, values, and priorities.

Taking time out to self-reflect, practice self-compassion, and engage in coaching can significantly strengthen emotional resilience and enhance leadership effectiveness—particularly in complex, changing environments. These practices, core elements of our retreats, empower individuals to build inner strength and gain clarity, helping them make thoughtful decisions. They also foster healthier relationships, both personally and professionally.

When we take the time to look inward, we begin to uncover our strengths, blind spots, and areas for growth. We gain clarity on what drives us, what drains us, and what we truly need to feel fulfilled. Whether it’s deciding on a new career path, nurturing healthier relationships, or simply re-energising our sense of self-worth, these moments of introspection can be life changing.

At our Women's Resilience and Leadership Retreat, we focus on providing our guests with the tools and safe space they need to rediscover their path forward, bring new insights and frameworks and opening new possibilities. It is deeply experiential and transformative experience where clients leave with a renewed sense of purpose, a tangible plan and better equipped to lead in their workplaces and in their personal lives.
